Not long ago, online visibility was mostly a Google question.
Today, a potential customer can ask ChatGPT, Copilot or an AI-powered search experience directly: What solution fits my needs? What are the alternatives? Which companies should I consider?
The way people find information is changing.
And that changes what businesses need to do to be found in the first place.
The good news? You don’t need to throw everything you know about search away.
SEO is still very much alive
AI search doesn’t make traditional SEO irrelevant.
Quite the opposite.
Search engines and AI services still need web content they can discover, understand and evaluate. Google’s own guidance for generative search continues to emphasize the same fundamentals: technically accessible websites, useful content and clear signals about what a business actually knows and offers.
Good SEO is still a strong foundation.
But rankings alone no longer tell the whole story.
From ranking in results to becoming part of the answer
Traditional search has a familiar objective: appear as high as possible in the results.
AI search works differently.
An AI-generated answer can combine information from multiple sources and surface companies, products and expertise directly within the response.
That means businesses need to start asking a slightly different question:
Does AI understand what we do, who we do it for and why we are a relevant choice?
If your website mainly says that you provide “high-quality, customer-centric solutions tailored to individual needs”, probably not very well.
Make your business easy to understand
The good news is that content designed for AI doesn’t need to sound like it was written for a machine.
Useful AI-friendly content is usually useful human-friendly content too.
Be clear about:
What do you do?
What products, services or solutions do you actually provide?
Who is it for?
What kinds of customers or situations are you best suited for?
What problem do you solve?
What changes for the customer when they work with you?
Why you?
What expertise, experience or point of difference makes your company worth considering?
What proves it?
Cases, experts, examples, data and first-hand experience all help establish credibility.
None of this is a new law of marketing.
AI simply makes vague positioning and generic website copy an even bigger disadvantage.
Don’t just create more content. Create better content.
Generative AI makes it possible to produce enormous amounts of content very quickly.
That doesn’t mean you should.
Generic articles that could have been published by almost any company give customers – and search systems – very little reason to choose yours.
The more valuable opportunity is to put genuinely useful expertise online:
- first-hand knowledge
- strong points of view
- real customer cases
- clear answers to customer questions
- useful comparisons
- original data and observations
- practical expertise competitors can’t simply copy
AI can help you produce the content.
The expertise still needs to come from you.
The technical basics still matter
Great content can’t do much if search and AI systems can’t access it.
Businesses should still make sure that:
- important pages can be crawled and indexed
- relevant search crawlers aren’t accidentally blocked
- the website has a clear structure
- important information exists in readable text
- company and service information is consistent
- outdated information gets updated
Not particularly futuristic.
That’s the point.
AI visibility isn’t a hack
AEO. GEO. AI SEO.
There are plenty of new acronyms competing for attention.
Behind them is a surprisingly familiar idea:
Make your business easy to find, understand and trust online.
AI is changing how information is discovered and presented. It isn’t removing the need for useful content, solid SEO or genuine expertise.
If anything, those things matter more.
So the question is no longer simply:
Can customers find you on Google?
It’s also:
Can AI find your business?
